Taking Care of Your Feet

Tips for Safety at the Nail Salon

  • Choose a salon that uses stainless steel or ceramic tools and not plastic instruments, which cannot be effectively sterilized. Have the pedicurist confirm that all ceramic and stainless steel tools have been chemically disinfected or sterilized before you let him/her begin working on you
  • If a jet whirlpool bath is used, ask how often it is cleaned. It should be thoroughly cleaned after every use
  • Make sure you get a fresh bowl of soapy water for your feet or hands
  • You and the technician should wash your hands before each treatment
  • Ensure they are using new emery boards, cotton balls, toe separators, and orange sticks on your nails
  • To be on the safe side, ask if you can bring your own nail kit or ask if the salon can make one for your personal use
  • For removal of calluses, corns, and warts it is important to seek the care of a health care professional and not a pedicurist
