Independent Medical Examination

An impartial assessment done by health professionals to clarify any number of predetermined issues that include:

Clarification of the diagnosis - in assessment lingo identifying the "impairment".
Estimating the prognosis - what the future holds. Discussing the natural course of the illness or injury.
Linking impairment to disability - defining what activities the ill or injured person can safely perform and activities which may result in harm or delay healing.
Making recommendations with respect to the necessity for further specialist, consultation and investigations including sophisticated diagnostics. Arranging the services in a timely manner when requested.
Providing opinions and recommendations on the necessity for additional treatments.
Opining on whether the conditions for a specific benefit has been met. For example has the impairment reached threshold based on a specific definition of disability.
Documentation of a person's complaints, appearance, physical and psychiatric findings.
Where appropriate recording of findings in still photographs or video format.
Providing a clearly understandable summary in language appropriate to the circumstances.
Adhering to the principles of moral and ethical conduct by demonstrating utmost respect for the client and his/her needs. Assuring the presence of a third party witness in the majority of cases, proper draping of anyone who is asked to undress and the presence of a chaperon during physical examination.
