Household Hazardous Waste:
Spring Cleaning in Other
Areas of the House

Products such as paints, pesticides, propane tanks, batteries, used motor oil, anti-freeze and other household products are all items that must be cleaned out regularly. It is important to adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations regarding safe storage, use and disposal. These products are likely hazardous waste and will require special disposal. When disposing of household hazardous products it is imperative that you do not pour any down the drain. Doing so causes problems within our sewer systems and is not environmentally friendly. Instead, contact your city for proper disposal techniques. If you live in Toronto, the Toxic Taxi will pick up your waste. For more information or to schedule a pick up time call (416) 392-4330.

Things to remember while spring-cleaning household products:

  • Store as per manufacturers recommendations
  • Be sure to seal the containers correctly as improperly sealed containers can lead to fires and health problems
  • Keep all household products in their original containers since these containers are marked appropriately with consumer safety labels/symbols and handling directions. Removal from these correctly labeled containers may result in chemicals being confused and used for the wrong purpose
  • Read the label prior to use
  • Follow safety precautions on the labels, such as what safety equipment to wear while using the product and what to do in case of accidental exposure
  • If you do not know the purpose of a product get rid of it appropriately
  • Read and follow all expiration dates, being sure to dispose of the items properly.

In case of accidental exposure, the phone number for Poison Control in Toronto is (416) 813-5900. In other cities, the number is listed in the beginning of the phone book. Keep this number on hand, near all your phones.
